Our Airstream Cabin

The name of this blog "From the Airstream" is taken from a series of From the Airstream printed newsletters that I sent, mid 1990's, to friends while I was living in a 31' 1970 Airstream in Moab on Powerhouse Lane, often living with 3 dogs and two cats. Never did tow it. Felt like my burrow. The cats came in via a step-ladder thru a window beside the bed that I could open without getting much awakened.

I hope this latest From the Airstream iteration involves travel stories.

But, truth be told, I even like visiting our little cabin with wheels even when it is just stored and stationery, awaiting orders.

We had been looking for a towable, affordable travel trailer.  Went to Austin, TX in mid-August to look at a 2003 22' Airstream International CCD.  Spotted this beauty mid one sleepless night on Craigslist Austin.

Drove the 1039 miles thru NM and TX. Pretty country we have.

Mike had set it up in Cedar Breaks Park on a Corps of Engineers Lake near Georgetown, TX.

Arrived Thursday evening before our Friday morn meeting. Drove over to see her then and there and a rainbow colored Sun Dog appeared in the sky just above the shining Airstream. And some tears of joy.

Mike and Robbie Timmer came right over and let me it. Liked them immediately. Loved the trailer. Sealed the deal on Friday complete with lessons and a Mexican lunch.

After lunch Saturday with other friends, I started out at noon, never having towed before. Arrived back in Moab after 1039 miles in 24 hours 33 min., the last 6 hours in rains, and a 2 hour nap about midnight.

It is in showroom shape. Looks new really. Jenifer very pleased and dreaming too. Luna and Skye already with their bed spots ready.

Our 2008 Chevy Avalanche tows the Airstream great. Gas mpg loses about 3 while towing for about 13-15.

Have been lovingly polishing, inspecting and lube-ing all surfaces ever since.

Installed a Camco Weight Distribution hitch with a Camco RV Olympian Adjustable Sway Bar Control.  Even I could do it after locating big wrenches.

Our inaugural first dinner and overnight was Sunday of Labor Day when we towed her up to about 9600' in the Lasal Mountains just below Geyser Pass. We parked at the edge of a parking lot and had a 100 mile view west toward the Henry Mountains.

Yet another Sun Dog appeared in the sunset clouds. Good sign, especially since they are rarely seen.

Even two friends, separately, stopped by. Truly lovely evening with Jenifer and the pooches.

A brief downpour of heavy rains found us snug and listening to the tap, tapping of the pelting on the Airstream's aluminum shell. Pure music, and glorious scents afterwards.  More, please.

We are Newbies to Airstream. Much to learn. Come along on future doings via this blog if you'd care to.
